Job Description

Is Tetris your game? Do you love the thrill that comes from organizing and delivering cohesive projects out of a collection of constantly moving and shifting parts?

What happens when your best laid plans slide sideways and start going out of control? Do you handle it like a circus ringmaster, smoothly turning failures into successes by way of learning experiences and improved processes?

Are a professional juggler? Can you accelerate in one area while slowing down in another, shifting resources and priorities to ensure that everything you want to get done keeps marching forwards?

If this resonates with you then you may be interested in the Technical Project Manager position at Crank Software.

Crank Software is an Ottawa based company and our product, Storyboard Suite, enables the development of rich embedded user interfaces that are created by graphic designers and deployed in embedded systems.

Your role as a technical project manager will be to work with Crankâs application and software development team and interface directly with Crankâs customers on joint software development projects. Your responsibilities will include the management of customer expectations, software schedules and project deliveries. You will also participate in scoping and estimating new projects and assist with resource assignment within Crank.

Here are a few of the other things that we suspect you will be involved with:

  • Establishing work plans and delivery schedules based on customer requirements
  • Engaging with clients to communicate work plans, status, and schedule updates
  • Manage customer expectations in terms of schedule, cost and scope
  • Liaising between Crankâs development team and customer project management
  • Tracking project tasks, including resource assignment, estimation, and status
  • Assess and respond to project risks leading to issue escalation or resolution
  • Administration of project management tools: Polarion and Asana
  • Quality assurance (content, documentation and schedule) for project deliveries
  • Measurement and assessment of Crank custom engineering team effectiveness

Every Crank customer project is just a little bit different; thatâs one of the most exciting aspects of this position. Some projects are composed of a single delivery of a specific technical extension to Storyboard. Other projects may last a few weeks and involve creating and delivering a complete user interface for integration as part of a larger software system. In a few instances Crank has customer engagements that last for years as our application developers work hand in hand with a customerâs team to bring a complete product to market.

This position will require you to interface with graphic designers, software and hardware developers and other project managers both inside and outside Crank. Projects are managed using a variety of methodologies, techniques, and tools, and a familiarity with this ever-changing landscape is essential for success. A successful applicant will have outstanding written and verbal communication skills to ensure that, regardless of the nature of the engagement, Crankâs positions are clearly-articulated and well-understood.

Here are a few other skills and aptitudes we think would be handy for this position:

  • A passion for great user interface experiences and people who want to build them
  • A technical background in software development (C/C++/Java) and software architecture
  • Experience with multi-component system such as mobile or web applications
  • Good social, interpersonal, and communication skills
  • Distributed team leadership or management experience, remote worker savvy
  • Experience managing work efforts for externally driven (beyond your control) projects
  • Familiar with a variety of time and project management tools
  • If I say agile, you say ⦠If I say waterfall, you say ⦠If I say kanban, you say â¦
  • Interest and ability to travel and work on-site with customers
